Pause for Christmas Smiles

Pause for Christmas SmilesIt’s been a sad and shocking week after the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. If you’d like resources for talking with your children or positive ways to make a difference, I’ve updated Wednesday’s Day of Silence post with resources.

It’s especially difficult to have a tragedy during the Christmas Season. Sometimes, we just need to pause our grieving to experience the joy and fun of the season. We can return later to our grieving and, hopefully, to finding ways to make a positive difference both in the world and for the victims and families of Sandy Hook.

Pause for Christmas Smiles

Project SmileToday, I want to share a brief interlude of Christmas smiles. For a number of fall and winter months in 2010-11, there was a Project Smile linky on the last day of the month. I enjoyed looking for different ideas that made me smile at least once a month. Here’s a link to those posts with lots of things that made me smile: Project Smile.

I also have a more recent post on Spreading Christmas Cheer with some Gangnam Style Christmas fun, including an update with a fun new video where my son, Will, joins some of his skating students in their Christmas show for “2012 Gangnam Style on Ice”: Spreading Christmas Cheer This Holiday Season – Gangnam Style.

Here are some ideas for helping your family experience a meaningful Christmas: How to Help Your Kids Develop Character This Christmastime.

How to Help Your Kids Develop Character at Christmastime

How to Help Your Kids Develop Character at ChristmastimeChristmastime sometimes inspires images of greedy kids begging for toys that will be quickly discarded. It doesn’t need to be that way. The Christmas season can be a time to help your kids develop character. Here are some ways you can help:

Make the Christmas Season about Giving Rather than Getting

A Holy Experience shares a beautiful, yet radical, way to remember what Christmas is truly about. In “The Grateful Christmas Project: 7 Ways to have more Grateful Kids this Christmas,” Ann Voskamp, author of One Thousand Gifts, tells what her family does for Christmas, giving their gifts to the Christ Child through charity gifts from Compassion Catalog, Samaritan’s Purse Catalog, Partner’s International Catalog, World Vision Catalog, Gospel for Asia Catalog, and Mennonite Central Committee Catalog.

As beautiful as giving all gifts to the Christ Child is, I think a family has to feel called to do this. Many families are called to do a modified version. Ann also shares ideas that aren’t as radical for Christian families at the end of her post. I love this sentence that any family could use as a focus: “Let’s focus on our Giving Lists —  and not so much on any getting lists.”

1+1+1=1 shares similar concepts that Christian families can use along with a more traditional Christian Christmas in her “Christmas Gifts for Jesus.” My family enjoyed focusing on food drives as well as helping the girls we sponsored through Compassion International feel extra special at Christmastime. This year, 1+1+1=1 shared a new idea in her latest “Christmas Gifts for Jesus” using The Sparkle Box book and gift box. That’s something I would have especially enjoyed doing with my kids if it would have been available when they were growing up. Note: I like the way this post from 1+1+1=1 shows the growth in character children can go through with these sorts of activities: “But I Want Toys!”

Here’s a video of Jill Hardie, the author of The Sparkle Box, telling about the book and tradition behind the book.

How to Help Your Kids Develop Compassion through Service Projects

How to Help Your Kids Develop Compassion through Service Projects

I have a post at Living Montessori Now with links to lots of resources: “How to Help Your Kids Develop Compassion Through Service Projects.”

Kids Stuff World has a “A Season of Giving: 31 Days of Service” with links to family-friendly service projects by many bloggers.

Coffee Cups and Crayons has a lovely idea of counting down to Christmas with “24 Days of Random Acts of Kindness.” Although it’s past December 1, it isn’t too late to start showing random acts of kindness from now through Christmas and beyond.

Raising Lifelong Learners had a post this Christmas season with “The Ultimate Guide to Random Acts of Kindness.”

The Iowa Farmer’s Wife gave ideas for “12 Days of Christmas Kindness.”

The Good Long Road shared examples of families’ Random Acts of Kindness at today’s Weekly Kid’s Co-op.

Here are some more ideas for random acts of kindness at any time from a post of mine last year: “Try a Little Kindness.”

Help Your Child Accept Gifts Courteously and with Gratitude

Montessori education has techniques to help children learn to graciously accept gifts and become comfortable with thanking someone for a gift. Here’s my post at Living Montessori Now on “Holiday Manners.”

Focus on the Nativity

How to Use Godly Play at Home during Advent

We’ve heard the slogans “Don’t take Christ out of Christmas” and “Jesus is the reason for the season.” And they’re good reminders. It’s helpful for our kids to focus on what Christmas is all about. I co-hosted a Focus on the Nativity Blog Hop at Living Montessori Now. You’ll find lots of wonderful  ideas for helping children remember what Christmas is about.

I especially love the sense of wonder that Godly Play and Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, two Montessori-based religious education programs can inspire in children. Here’s a post with ideas for helping children truly experience the Mystery of Christmas: “How to Use Godly Play at Home during Advent.”

Be an Example of Good Character at Christmas

It’s easy to get caught up in all the things that need to be done at Christmastime. But the best way we can help our children is to be truly present at Christmas and to be models of what Christmas is really about. Take time to slow down and enjoy any service projects you might be doing … sincerely enjoy the act of giving. I always found it important to simplify the other parts of Christmas to keep myself balanced during the Christmas season. Here’s a post with ideas to help: “10 Tips for Avoiding Holiday Burnout.”

Spreading Christmas Cheer This Holiday Season – Gangnam Style

"The Best Way to Spread Christmas Cheer" Word Art Freebie

I refuse to participate in Christmas activities before Thanksgiving, but I love the start of the holiday season once Thanksgiving has arrived. My house is already decorated for Christmas, and I’m feeling the Christmas spirit now. Here are my favorite ways to get in the Christmas spirit:

While I focused on 21 Days of Contagious Gratitude before Thanksgiving this year, an attitude of gratitude helps me get in the Christmas spirit, too. It also helps if I focus on the true meaning of Christmas. The other thing that helps me is to focus on the fun (especially family fun), rather than all the extra things that need to be done before Christmas. (I’ve worked on keeping all the extra things that need to be done to a minimum.)

Here are some fun posts from the start of holiday seasons past as well as some fun for this season.

Using Talents and Spreading Joy – Sean Quigley

Gratitude, happiness, and using your talents are big topics with me. The inspirational “Sean Quigley – Little Drummer Boy” says a lot about using your talents and gratitude/happiness. The video was uploaded to YouTube on November 30. It already has 963,499 views.

If you haven’t seen the YouTube video, here it is:

I just love the joy and true spirit of Christmas that 16-year-old Sean Quigley exudes in the video. And I love that that the video shows someone truly using and appreciating his talents. According to a CTV news story:

“The teen’s production is all the more remarkable considering Quigley played all the instruments, sang the vocals, recorded everything and directed and edited the video.”

I hope we can all be a bit like Sean Quigley – finding and using our unique talents and spreading joy in the process.

Wishing you lots of joy this holiday season! :)

Feeling Joy This Holiday Season

All I want for Christmas is ...If you’re like me, you can’t quite believe it’s December already. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or another holiday, December can be a magical month … or it can be a stressful month.

“Christmas … is not a date. It is a state of mind.” Mary Ellen Chase

I’ve found that I can enjoy my family and the holiday season best by slowing down, keeping obligations to a minimum, and focusing on my family and the magic of the season.

Family activities like Advent wreaths and calendars can be special and fun – if you feel ready to enjoy them. I have a post at Living Montessori Now with lots of “50+ December Family Activities.”  I also wrote a post called “10 Tips for Avoiding Holiday Burnout.” When Will and Christina were growing up, we were able to have wonderful Christmases by just choosing a few favorite activities that we all found fun and relaxing – ones that created special memories but not a lot of stress.

One of our chosen ways to get into the Christmas spirit was to drive through specially decorated parts of the city. Now, we can find some amazing Christmas inspiration on YouTube.

Here’s one of my favorite synchronized Christmas light displays:
