Gratitude for Positive Family Values

Gratitude for Positive Family Values

My life has been enriched this month by focusing on something I’m grateful for each day as part of the 21 Days of Contagious Gratitude organized by Mari from Inspired by Family Magazine. I’ve also been awed by all the family gratitude activities other bloggers have shared to deepen the sense of gratitude within families.

Gratitude is one of my favorite themes (see gratitude posts and word-art freebies), and I loved sharing this focus with bloggers around the world. Throughout the month, I’ve noticed that many of my daily expressions of gratitude have been related to family. While my life has been unbelievably blessed by my husband, kids, and kids-in-love, it all starts for me with my parents.

Gratitude for Positive Family Values

I grew up on a farm in northeastern South Dakota, 40 miles from the original Little Town on the Prairie. The Little House on the Prairie series with its positive family values was a theme I loved to share with my own children when they were little. I tell more about that in my “Little House on the Prairie Unit Study” at Living Montessori Now.

Today I’m thankful for positive family values, which make life better for everyone. I’m thrilled to celebrate not only Thanksgiving but my parents’ 60th wedding anniversary with my parents and much of our extended family this week.

I’m grateful for the example of a loving marriage that inspired my own happy marriage of 37 years as well as other long-lasting marriages among my siblings. I’m grateful that my parents raised my four siblings and me with an emphasis on faith, family, community, hard work, and doing things to help others.

I like to think that the positive values I grew up with are reflected in my own life and the lives of my now-adult children. I’m grateful that I know so many amazing people around the world who are working to share similar positive family values with their own children. It is truly a happy Thanksgiving! :)

How to Have a Good Day

Here’s an inspiring TED Talk on gratitude with Louie Schwartzberg, founder of Blacklight Films. The TED Talk includes some amazing time-lapse photography and a beautiful short film about gratitude and happiness.

The short film combines Schwartzberg’s cinematography with music by Gary Malkin and words and narration by Brother David Steindl-Rast from Gratefulness.org. This is definitely worth 10 minutes of your time!

YouTube Preview Image

Here’s a transcription of Brother David Steindl-Rast’s words from the video:

You think this is just another day in your life. It’s not just another day. It’s the one day that is given to you today. It’s given to you. It’s a gift. It’s the only gift that you have right now. And the only appropriate response is gratefulness. If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response to the great gift that this unique day is, if you learn to respond as if it were the first day in your life and the very last day, then you will have spent this day very well.

Begin by opening your eyes and be surprised that you have eyes you can open, that incredible array of colors that is constantly offered to us for our pure enjoyment. Look at the sky. We so rarely look at the sky. We so rarely note how different it is from moment to moment with clouds coming and going. We just think of the weather and even of the weather we don’t think of all the many nuances of weather. We just think of good weather and bad weather. This day right now is unique weather, maybe a kind that will never exactly in that form come again. The formation of clouds in the sky will never be the same that is right now. Open your eyes. Look at that.

Look at the faces of people whom you meet. Each one has an incredible story behind their face, a story that you could never fully fathom. Not only their own story, but the story of their ancestors. We all go back so far. And in this present moment on this day all the people you meet, all that life from generations and from so many places all over the world flows together and meets you here like a life-giving water if you only open your heart and drink.

Open your heart to the incredible gifts that civilization gives to us. You flip a switch and there is electric light. You turn a faucet and there is warm water and cold water. And drinkable water! It’s a gift that millions and millions in the world will never experience.

So these are just a few of an enormous number of gifts to which we can open your heart. So I wish you that you would open your heart to all these blessings and let them flow through you, that everyone whom you will meet on this day will be blessed by you, just by your eyes, by your smile, by your touch. Just by your presence. Let the gratefulness overflow into blessing all around you. Then it will really be a good day.

ThanksGiving is Good but ThanksLiving is Better

"ThanksGiving is good but ThanksLiving is better." Matthew Henry

I love the Matthew Henry gratitude quote “ThanksGiving is good but ThanksLiving is better.” As much as my family and I love Thanksgiving, I hope we can all remember that it’s best to be grateful every day.

That said, I’m taking Friday off from blogging to spend more time with my family this wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! Happy ThanksGiving and Happy ThanksLiving! :)

How to Help Your Kids Have an Attitude of Gratitude, Part 2

Last spring, I published a post called How to “How to Help Your Kids Have an Attitude of Gratitude.” I think gratitude is important year-round, but November is a perfect month to place an extra emphasis on gratitude. Maybe there are some gratitude activities you’d like to start for your family. Or maybe you’d like to do something different just for the month.

The Power of Gratitude

“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” Maya Angelou

“Jack Canfield – How Gratitude Changed This Multi-Millionaire’s Life.” The beginning of this video is a truly inspiring story of the power of gratitude.

Family Gratitude Activities

Here are some more family gratitude activities you could choose from. Just find the activity you feel drawn to, an activity you think would be fun and meaningful for your family.

Light a Candle from Gratefulness.org is a beautiful online activity that encourages thoughtfulness and thankfulness.

Education.com has an article on “Teaching Gratitude.” It recommends three activities:

  1. Keep a family “gratitude journal” or lists of things family members are thankful for….
  2. Slow down and smell the roses. “Savoring” good experiences can heighten positive emotions. Adults can teach kids to savor positive events by habitually expressing gratitude when nice things happen, even if they are very small things. Simply stop what you are doing and express thanks for the moment—a beautiful sunset, the chance to smile at a baby, the opportunity to be with your child.
  3. Write “gratitude letters” large and small….

Kristina Belnap at Parent Guide News has an article called “Attitude of Gratitude.” Her suggestions are to:

  1. Model Gratitude
  2. Expect your child to show gratitude.
  3. Go guilt-free.
  4. Commit random (but regular) acts of service and gratitude.

“Gratitude Dance” This is just fun, and a gratitude dance is an activity that could work well if your family loves to move and dance together.

I have a new post at Living Montessori Now called “Montessori-Inspired Gratitude Activities” with links to lots of resources.

Pinterest - Kids' Thanksgiving Activities
And I keep adding family gratitude activities along with other Thanksgiving activities to my Kids’ Thanksgiving Activities Pinterest board. There are links to posts for a Thanksgiving tree (many different types of Thanksgiving tree), gratitude journal, gratitude bowl, gratitude jar, gratitude board, and gratitude garland. I love that Pinterest is so visual. Hopefully, you’ll find an activity that appeals to you.

Do you have a family gratitude activity during November or year-round?

Abby Rike Gives Inspiration to Live Today

It’s so easy to lose perspective … to feel sorry for ourselves … to be jealous of someone who seems to have more … to place too much importance on winning a competition. Then something or someone can come along to jolt us back into reality … to help us realize just how much we have to be grateful for.

Some of the horrific natural disasters this spring have been those sorts of reminders. The people of Japan and the people trying to put their lives back together after the tornadoes in the U.S can’t help but remind us that we’re really not in control of our lives … that we need to show gratitude for what we have and make each moment count.

Another reminder and inspiration is Abby Rike from the 2009 Biggest Loser show.

In this November 3, 2009, video, Abby talks about having hope:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhimjdcHKSs&feature=related

Christopher Reeve said something similar through his life and words:

I also like the Richard Bach quote “Cherish yesterday, Dream tomorrow, Live today.”

Abby is living that quote. Abby on May 6, 2011: “After tragedy, ‘Loser’ star finds strength in faith”
